Does it count as shameless self promotion if you feel ashamed?

Does it count as shameless self promotion if you feel ashamed?

  • Office supply shop clerk: "How may I help you?"
  • Me: "I'd like to buy some drawing pens."
  • Office supply shop clerk: "Oh, you need pencils?"
  • Me: "No, I'd like to buy some drawing pens. Pens to draw with."
  • Office supply shop clerk: "Ah, you'd like some pens? To write with?"
  • Me: "No, I need drawing pens. Are those all the pens you've got over there? I'll just take a look, thank you."
  • Now how is this any different from the following conversation:
  • Office supply shop clerk: "How may I help you?"
  • Me: "I'd like to buy some lined paper."
  • Office supply shop clerk: "Oh, you need checkered paper?"
  • Me: "No, I'd like to buy some lined paper. Paper with lines on it."
  • Office supply shop clerk: "Ah, you'd like some blank paper?"
  • Me: "No, I need lined paper. Is that all the paper you've got over there? I'll just take a look, thank you."
  • And why would the second conversation never take place, yet the first just did?
